Air purifier filters: which ones should you buy? | Kansas City Clean Air

Do you have allergies? Pets? Mold growing in your home? A dryer vent that needs cleaning? Air purifiers are a cost-effective way to help you and your family breathe better air.

What are air purifiers?

An air purifier is an appliance that can help reduce the presence of allergens in your home. These units come with multiple filters, which need to be replaced regularly.

Air purifiers work differently depending on the type of air you want purified. Some remove allergens, while some simply trap pollutants. Not all air purifiers are effective for dryer vent cleaning or dryer exhaust duct cleaning but they are effective at eliminating dryer lint and dryer sheets. The dryers push these chemicals into the air, which can cause respiratory problems for some people. If you’re not sure what dryer lint looks like, look at the dryer vent after a load of dry clothes – it looks similar to the dryer sheets.

Not sure which air purifier is best for your home?

Here are three things to consider when purchasing an air purifier:

1) Programmable Timer – An air purifier with a programmable timer can be set before you leave your home and run all night long, even if there are no lights on in the room. These filters do not contain any mercury and contain active ingredients that create ozone when they come into contact with each other in dry air at high temperatures. Ozone is an irritant and may cause respiratory problems in some people. If you suffer from asthma or other breathing conditions, consult your doctor before using an air purifier with a programmable timer.

2) Anion Generator – This type of air purifier emits negative ions which bond to positively-charged particles such as dryer lint and pet dander instead of collecting them. These positive ions are discharged into the dry air inside your home and react with the negatively charged particles. This reaction traps these particles and removes them from the air, resulting in clean air.

3) True HEPA –True HEPA filter contains activated carbon for trapping dryer lint, allergens and odors. A true HEPA filter is more effective than a standard HEPA filter, but costs significantly more.

Are air purifiers enough to fix air vent issues?

Air purifiers are only effective at eliminating dryer lint and dryer sheets.  They won’t help dryer vent issues such as lint accumulation and restricted airflow. It’s important to clean dryer vents regularly to ensure your dryer operates efficiently and safely.

Not sure if your dryer vent needs a cleaning? A dryer vent specialist can properly diagnose the problem. They may recommend using air purifiers in addition to clearing dryer vents.

Where to buy air purifiers?

If you’re in the market for an air purifier, there are a few places you can buy them. Amazon, Walmart and Target all carry air purifiers, as well as other retailers like Best Buy.

When shopping for an air purifier, be sure to consider the type of air purifier, the size of the unit and how often the filters need to be replaced. Filters can be expensive, so it’s important to find one that fits your budget.

If you’re looking for a thorough air vent cleaning in Kansas City, make sure to research companies and ask them about their prices and services.
